EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
